BizLink Extends USB 3.1 Range up to 5 Meters and 10Gbit/sec with Powered USB Type-C Cable

10Gbit/s active cable: longer and faster
Other USB 3.1 cables, of the Gen 1 type, are limited to data transfer rates under 5Gbit/s. Meanwhile, Gen 1 cables cannot provide enough bandwidth for the highest quality images. In addition, Gen 1 Type-C passive cables cannot exceed two meters in length. With the need for faster data transfer speeds of up to 10GB per second, Gen 2 cables are much sought after. Unfortunately, Gen 2 passive cables suffer signal and speed loss over distances of more than one meter (three feet), but many applications require longer cables. For example, monitors need cables at least 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) long.
The new BizLink powered USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable conquers these challenges. BizLink’s R&D engineering team chose the most suitable IC components and PCB material for high-speed applications such as this active cable. In order to ensure high-speed performance, they designed the paddle card to control the impedance of the high-speed traces and first simulated the cable with electromagnetic wave tools. BizLink’s R&D team created protocols and firmware, and conducted many internal compatibility tests to ensure the functionality of the cable. The cable can be far longer than passive Gen 2 cables, making it suitable for applications such as VR and video monitors and for environments where a television, monitor or projector is far from its host device.
With the continued demand for better performance from console platforms, the need for 4K, and even 8K visual performance is growing. The need to transfer larger and larger amounts of visual and gaming data through cables will continue as games deliver higher quality graphics, audios, and videos. The Nintendo Switch is already using USB Type-C cables, and it will be no surprise if more devices include USB Type-C cables.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 devices and cables suffer from signal degradation as the signal travels through PCB traces, switches, connectors, and cables, so it is often necessary to embed a signal conditioner inside an active switch. A redriver consists of a receiver and a transmitter that boost, equalize, and condition the signal as it passes through the cable from the receiver side to the transmitter side. Retimers are critical to ensure the best possible signal condition no matter the trace length, cable length, or plug orientation — and they also reduce power usage.
