After many
years in service, the parallel SCSI has reach its technological
limits of performance. The new generation of interconnectivity
solutions for the data storage industry is Serial Attached SCSI
(SAS). With a point-to-point architecture in which storage devices
connect directly to the SAS ports increases data throughput and
improve the ability to fix disk failures.
The SAS standard is designed with an infrastructure that is
compatible with SATA drives giving IT managers the flexibility to
choose solutions. The speed of the first generation SAS is 3.0 Gb/s,
the links are duplex, which means that they send and receive
information simultaneously, reducing latency.
Features & Benefits
- Speed: First-generation SAS link
speed is 3.0 Gb/s. The second generation will reach 6.0
Gb/s.
- Full Duplex: SAS links send and
receive information simultaneously which will reduce
latency.
- SATA compatibility: SAS
infrastructure will be compatible with SATA drives, allowing for
both technologies to exist in the same system.
- Connector: SAS and SATA devices will
share the same physical device connector, SAS will accept SATA,
but SATA will not accept SAS.
- Bandwidth: SAS interface allows for
combining multiple links to create 2x, 3x, or 4x connections for
scalable bandwidth.
SAS Connectors
SAS will share the same physical device connector as SATA,
allowing for SATA devises to connect to SAS, but not the other way
around. This will provide customers with maximum flexibility in
system configuration. The SAS connector has been enhanced with a
second data port. This port will provide independent path from one
SAS device to another. If one path fails, there is still
communication kept with the other path.
